PACKAGING ENGINEER SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

• Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs and prototype development.
• Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.
• Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, and types of materials required for packaging.
• Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.
• Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
• Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs.
• Work with the manufacturing department to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability.
• Perform Cost Estimating and Quoting to include creation and maintenance of software tools used for estimating.
• Create structured bills of material.

PACKAGING ENGINEER QUALIFICATIONS

• A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or packaging engineering is required.
• Demonstrable proficiency in SolidWorks and/or AutoDesk Inventor is required.
• Knowledge and understanding of packaging design is desired.

Problem solving and decision-making skills are necessary. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must have good communication skills, verbally and in writing. Need a strong understanding of process improvement and quality improvement concepts.

Candidate needs:

• Proficient in Microsoft Office with above average skills in Excel.
• Working knowledge of wood products and woodworking equipment.
• Working knowledge or ability to learn Enroute software for programming & operation of CNC router.
• Ability to read and interpret ASTM packaging specifications.
